SOMERSET – Alternative medicine, once called “quackery,” has become mainstream as more and more people take a proactive approach to their own wellbeing.
Whether the goal is losing weight, lowering blood pressure, or finding some inner calm to nix stress, there are lots of places to turn. Increasingly, medical research is taking a shine to alternative healing, and studies are highlighting practices like mindfulness and meditation to alleviate or prevent some everyday ills.
A study by a Mass General Hospital Department of Psychiatry researcher showed that mindfulness meditation helped patients with anxiety disorder decrease their stress.
Another study published in Psychosomatic Medicine: Journal of Biobehavioral Medicine, summarized that borderline high blood pressure decreased after using mindfulness-based stress reduction.
If you’re looking for your own inner zen, alternative therapies like meditation, massage, reiki, chakra balancing, and mindfulness, are bountiful in the local area.
A wellness, consciousness and psychic fair is one place to start. Enlightenings, 1078 County St., is hosting the fair on Saturday, March 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“I think there’s a shift going on in how (people) treat their own health,” said Lori Belche, shop owner and psychic medium.
She said meditation — just sitting quietly — is a way to heal, along with quantum healing (a new workshop being offered). The use of herbs and oils, and massage, can be powerful ways to soothe the soul.
Enlightenings opened in the fall of 2017 to bring alternative practices and healing therapies to the area. The shop offers a multi-media salt cave to improve breathing, skin conditions, and other ailments.
“It’s like being at the beach,” Belche said.
The fair will offer card readings, mini reiki sessions, numerology, aura drawings, chair massage, chakra balancing/mind clearing, and salt therapy.
Visitors can try the para-psychology playground and test their abilities on the telekinesis tower, pendulum power, and Targ telepathy.
The retail store will be open with handcrafted jewelry, essential oils, crystals and stones, incense, divination tools, salt lamps, and more, for sale. The fair is free, but gratitude bowls will be set out for each practitioner.
